Capture your grief

As Max's second birthday approaches, in November, I welcome the milestone as a chance to focus on him as much as I dread it for what it signifies: that a very long time has elapsed since I saw him for the first and for the last time.

As we get further out from our loss, the opportunities to mourn and to remember him lessen. In those early days, when you are actually still counting in days, there are so many significant days and so much time to mark them. For instance, for a long time each Thursday that passed was an 'event' for me, given Max was born on a Thursday and it had also been the day my pregnancy ticked over week by week. Of course we don't need a reason to remember Max, he is with us every day of our lives, but the difference is that our grief now rattles along beside us as we get on with the business of living instead of being our sole focus, stopping us in our tracks.

For this reason, I really welcomed October and the amazing Carly Marie's project intended for bereaved parents to capture their grief using a series of prompts and ideas for each day of October, which is pregnancy and infant loss awareness month. I'm already quite a few days behind, but have decided to address the prompts at my own pace for the next little while as an exercise in personal reflection, as well as to think of, and share, Max's story in a new way.

I'll write and use photographs to explore the idea each prompt gives me. I'm really looking forward to getting started.

You can read more about the project and get a head start on the prompts here.
